Studio Connections Initiative General FAQ

What is Studio Connections? 1 STUDIO CONNECTIONS is the name of an initiative that is lead by Steinberg and Yamaha. The initiative intends to create standards for totally integrated system environments using software and hardware products.

What is the difference between OPT and VST? 2 OPT is an interface technology between host applications and hardware editors and transmits mainly communication data like MIDI. VST is an audio/communication protocol between host applications and audio effect plug-ins/virtual instruments software, and transmits/ receives both audio and communication data.

How does this differ from OPT from Yamaha, which also aims to integrate software and hardware? 3 In the Studio Connections "Recall" solution, some functions of OPT have been adopted to create OPT2. Also, a guideline of user interface design has been defined to ensure compatibility of user interface by DAW applications. And very importantly, the Studio Connections "Recall" solution is fully cross-platform, supporting Mac OS X as well as Windows 2000/XP.

What markets does Studio Connections target? 4 Wide range of Music/Audio production market as well as the post-production market.

What Operating Systems are supported?

5 Windows XP, Mac OS X

Studio Connections "Recall" FAQ

What can I do with Studio Connections "Recall" solution? 1 You can save and recall all settings of your hardware products and software products by opening one integrated file in a DAW such as Cubase or Nuendo. Also you will have instant and organized access to hardware editors.

Which Yamaha products are supported as Studio Connections "Recall"? 2 DM2000v2, 02R96v2,DM1000v2, 01V96v2, 01X, MOTIF ES, S90ES, MOTIF-RACK ES, MOTIF-RACK and SPX2000 are supported. Several products will follow.

What is the difference between "GTRC template" and "Editor"? 3 GTRC template can not do a edit. GTRC template is something like a "bulk catcher". It can save/recall some parameters with Studio Manager into the project files.

Studio Connections "Audio Integration" FAQ

What is "Audio Integration"? 1 Studio Connections is a joint project lead by Steinberg and Yamaha the aim of Studio Connections is quite simply to offer a more convenient environment that will make using hardware and software easier. The first Phase of Studio Connections was Studio Connections "Recall", Audio Integration is Phase II.

Audio Integration allows you to use a Studio Manager Component (software editors) as a VST instrument or a VST effect by using the "External Instrument" function which is new to CubaseSX3.1/Nuendo3.1.

By selecting a hardware synthesizer or an effect Processor on the software, you can use it just like software plug-in.

Output of the hardware synthesizer is set up on the Audio mixer in realtime, and you can not only apply the audio effect but use unique audio functions such as mix down or freeze.
Capable instruments and operating environment of Audio Integration 2 [ Support Models ]
- Hardware synthesizers (tone generators) which are compatible with the Studio Manager V2 - Hardware Products - MOTIF ES6/7/8, MO6/MO8, S90ES, MOTIF-RACK ES, MOTIF-RACK, SPX2000 are capable at this time (12/1/2005)..

[ Operating Environment ]
- Host Application: CubaseSX3.1/Nuendo3.1
- Studio Manager V2 and an Editor (Voice Editor, Multi Part Editor, etc.)
* We recommend using the latest version.
- MIDI interface or USB terminal of the synthesizer unit (USB-MIDI)
* Use both MIDI IN and MIDI OUT
- Audio interface with having multi I/O and low latency
(mLAN16E loaded to the MOTIF ES and the S90ES can be used.)
The main flow of the required setting of the Audio Integration on the CubaseSX3.1 (Nuendo3.1) 3 1) Start the CubaseSX3.1, and the compatible Editor is set up on the work space of the Studio Manager V2.
* Bring the MIDI port of each Editor into line with the required MIDI port to playback the synthesizer.

2) Menu: Device > "VST Audiobay" in the device setting > Master ASIO Driver

3) Select Menu: Device > VST Connection. Add required number of the external instruments (bus) by using the "External Instrument" tab to set the audio device and the device port in each bus.

4) Select Menu: Device > VST Instrument. Select (add) the Editor set on the external instrument.
* The bus of the hardware synthesizer is set up on the Audio Mixer by this operation.

5) Input the MIDI data to the optional MIDI track in the CubaseSX3.1 and select the output port set in the 1) operation to confirm that MIDI sounds come up on the Audio Mixer in realtime. It can be applied various kinds of effects just like other audio channels. If you click the Edit button in the inspector, you can open the Editor of hardware.

* Output of the synthesizer (tone generator) is required to be inputted to an Audio interface.
* CubaseSX3.1. Project will save all relevant settings of the external devices including patching.
* The examples of specific connection/setting will be released at a later date.

Don't I need hardware anymore because the MOTIF ES will become a VST instrument if I use the Audio Integration? 4 Yes. You still need a MOTIF ES unit (hardware). You can use the software Voice Editor and the Multi Part Editor of the MOTIF ES as a VST instrument. However, the MOTIF ES Tone Generator does not become a VST instrument.

Is it possible to use Audio Integration and mLAN at the same time? 5 Yes. It is possible to use Audio Integration and mLAN at the same time in both cases; the case that the 01X or the i88X is used as an interface with an mLAN16E in a synthesiser (such as a MOTIF ES) Audio Integration is used with very simple wiring because the audio cable and the MIDI cable are not required.

What are differences between Audio Integration and the functions of the external instrument? What about advantages? 6 The Audio Integration allows you to use functions of the external instrument via software Editors, just as if you were using the Edit screen of the software synthesizer. The advantages are that the settings of the external instrument will be saved as part of Studio Connections.

Is it possible to use multiple instruments that are compatible with Audio Integration? 7 Yes, it is possible. For example, you can use the S90ES (mounted with mLAN16E) and the MOTIF-RACK ES simultaneously. There is no limitation of the number of the hardware devices that can be used simultaneously when using Audio Integration.

* The number of use depends on the processing performance of the computer and the number of I/O of interfaces.

When MOTIF-RACK ES is used as Audio Integration, can we apply the audio effect of CubaseSX3 while applying the built-in effect on the MOTIF-RACK ES with the Multi Part Editor? 8 Yes. The voice output of the MOTIF-RACK ES is set up on the Audio mixer by Audio Integration. Therefore, after the effect with built-in MOTIF-RACK ES is adjusted with the Multi Part Editor, the audio effect can be applied by the Audio Mixer of the CubaseSX3. The cases that the Voice Editor and the synthesizer (tone generator) for other Audio Integration are used are also the same.

Is the 01X compatible with Audio Integration? 9 Audio Integration is compatible with the synthesizer (tone generator) and the effect processors. However, it is not compatible with the 01X because the tone generator is not installed in the 01X. The VST Effect called "01X Channel" is prepared, the EQ and Dynamics system effect of the 01X can be used in the Audio Mixer of the CubaseSX3.1 directly. However because the 01X can be used as an Audio/MIDI interface, it is possible to use it as an interface for Audio Integration.

When MOTIF-RACK ES is used with Multi Part Editor, the edit for 16CH is possible. Does the output for 16CH set up on the Audio mixer when using Audio Integration? 10 No, the number of channels which sets up the Audio mixer of the CubaseSX3 depends on the number of outputs for each hardware device. Therefore, when the MOTIF-RACK ES is used, 6CH can be output in the maximum. The setting of assignable out of each CH in the MOTIF-RACK ES is also required.
(Reference: When the mLAN16E is loaded to the MOTIF ES, 14CH can be parallel out in the maximum.)
